Environmental Justice in Housing Policy.
Historically some housing neighborhoods were built in close proximity to oil fields for ease for the workers and their families -
living close to the oil fields made sense. Today, we know the potential health impacts from air emissions, water contamination and traffic that can impact communities near active oil and gas operations.
These potential impacts are compounded when other demographic information is considered and today we are working to bring Environmental Justice to Ventura County land use policy by ensuring housing development plans are mindful of nearby pollution sources, thus creating a scenario where development is actually adding "sensitive receptors" to an area where people should not be living - especially for low income and "affordable" housing developments.
Ventura County Planning is hosting a series of Focus Group meetings to receive input from stakeholders about various topics related to the General Plan Update.
This General Plan document governs all land use in the county and will be in effect until 2040. The document is currently being updated this is the second round of public outreach meetings to receive input.
